About Smith

W. Smith McAulay is a North Carolina native and has been active in the Asheville homebuilding industry since 2005. Since graduating from the University of the South in Sewanee, TN, with degrees in Studio Art/Art History and Comparative Religion, Smith combined his thorough craftsmanship with his love of music working for Cumberland Acoustic. There he developed a process for manufacturing banjo rims as well as facilitating the production of a variety of parts and components for acoustic instruments.

A desire to return to North Carolina brought him back to Asheville in 2005. Smith served as Warranty and Customer Service Superintendent for Biltmore Farms Homes until 2007 when he began operating as an independent contractor.  Smith’s home is also his sanctuary, where he enjoys developing and cultivating his own home and garden in West Asheville with his partner Susanne and their dogs Merlin and Maizey. His passion for music endures as he performs in various venues about town, including Green River Preserve’s summer contra dances. Music also infuses his creative design process in his contracting work. Smith is active in the community as well.  He is a sitting officer in Nichols-West Asheville Masonic Lodge, where he leads a variety of volunteer projects and fundraisers.  He is dedicated to the local business economy in Asheville, and is a proponent of the Connect Buncombe greenway effort.  Never far from his radio dial, Smith is an avid supporter of WNCW 88.7.
